OUR MISSION

DFFX combines the experience, quality, and infrastructure of a large VFX facility with the flexibility and personal attention of a boutique studio.

From traditional VFX and animation to motion capture, virtual production, digital scanning, and generative AI, we tailor our approach to each production rather than forcing every creative challenge through the same pipeline.

Big-studio capabilities. Boutique flexibility. Whatever it takes to get the shot!

Our Services

Our Services

Pre-Production & Virtual Production

We provide a wide range of pre-production services including:

  • Storyboarding

  • Concept Development

  • Previsualization (Previs) & PostVis

  • Virtual Production Planning

From early creative development through production planning, we help filmmakers design shots before cameras roll. Our on-site Vicon motion capture stage and Unreal-powered virtual production pipeline enable real-time previs, performance capture, and rapid iteration before moving into final VFX.

Visual Effects

At our core, we're visual effects artists. Since 2013, DFFX has delivered high-end VFX across feature films, episodic television, and commercials. We specialize in:

  • 3D Crowd Simulation

  • Digital Doubles

  • Character & Creature Animation

  • Magic & Supernatural FX

  • Fire, Smoke & Destruction

  • Set Extensions & Environments

  • Driving Comps

  • Greenscreen, Plate Cleanup & Invisible VFX

We also provide on-set VFX supervision, pre-production breakdowns, bidding, and budgeting—allowing us to support productions from initial planning through final delivery.

Volumetric Capture & Animated Gaussian Splats

Our custom 54-camera capture system creates high-fidelity volumetric performances and digital doubles without the overhead of a traditional mesh-based CG pipeline.

Using animated Gaussian splats, captured talent and props can be integrated into Unreal environments, relit, composited into traditional VFX shots, or used as precise training data for AI-driven workflows.

The result: faster asset creation, authentic captured performances, and greater flexibility across traditional VFX, virtual production, and AI.

AI Integration & Machine Learning Pipelines

We approach generative AI as another tool in the VFX pipeline—not a replacement for creative control. Our custom workflows combine traditional animation and VFX techniques with Unreal, motion capture, ComfyUI, and generative models, allowing our artists to maintain greater control over camera, performance, composition, and environment.

From AI-assisted digital doubles and face work to video-to-video transformation and integrating generated elements into production plates, our focus is on combining the speed of AI with the art direction and predictability of traditional VFX.

Let's Build Something Together

Whether you're producing a commercial, feature film, episodic series, or exploring the new frontier of AI-generated content, DFFX is ready to be your creative partner. From storyboards to final pixels — or training data to real-time renders — we’d love to hear how we can support your next project.

Chad Finnerty, owner / vfx supervisor

Chad Finnerty is a veteran visual effects artist, supervisor, and studio owner with more than two decades of experience across feature films, television, animation, motion capture, and holographic entertainment. Early in his career at Digital Domain, Chad served as a Crowd Simulation Lead, Animation Lead, and Motion Capture Lead, contributing to films including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, 2012, and the Academy Award-winning animated feature Happy Feet. He later served as Animation Supervisor at Pixomondo before co-founding Digital Frontier FX in 2013.

As Co-Owner and VFX Supervisor of DFFX, Chad has supervised work for productions including Marvel Studios' The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Fear the Walking Dead, and Resident Evil. Nearly two decades after contributing to Happy Feet, Chad and the DFFX team also contributed to Ne Zha 2, which became the highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide.

Chad has also helped push DFFX beyond traditional film and television, supervising the digital resurrection of legendary musicians Ronnie James Dio and Frank Zappa for live holographic performances, as well as the Ronald Reagan holographic experiences permanently installed at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Today, he leads the creative and technical direction of DFFX from concept and previsualization through final delivery.
